Portugal digital nomad visa requirements 2026: D8 from the UAE
Portugal D8 digital nomad visa requirements for UAE residents in 2026: €3,680 a month averaged over 3 months, proof of remote work, documents and fees.
5 November 2026
To qualify for Portugal's D8 visa in 2026, you need remote-work income averaging at least €3,680 a month (≈ AED 15,240) over the last 3 months, from employers or clients outside Portugal. The D8 is often called Portugal's digital nomad visa. Any legal UAE resident can apply, whatever their nationality.
D8 requirements at a glance
- Income: an average of €3,680 a month over the last 3 months, from remote work for employers or clients outside Portugal.
- Proof: an employment contract or employer letter with written consent to work from Portugal, or contracts with your clients.
- Families: plan on €5,520 a month for a couple, plus €1,104 for each child.
- Also needed: proof of tax residence, accommodation in Portugal, travel medical insurance and police certificates.
- Timeline: about 4–7 months to the visa, and about 6–14+ months to the residence card.
Who qualifies for the D8
The D8 is Portugal's remote work visa, for people who live in Portugal and work for employers or clients based abroad. It suits:
- remote employees of a company based outside Portugal, including UAE companies that allow remote work
- freelancers and contractors with clients outside Portugal
- founders and company owners, including owners of UAE free-zone companies, who are paid by their own business
You can't take a job with a Portuguese employer on a D8. The residence version means making Portugal your home, and long absences can put your permit at risk.
If you live on a pension, rent or dividends, the D7 visa is usually the better fit. Our D7 vs D8 guide compares the two.
The 3-month income test
The D8 threshold is 4 times Portugal's national minimum wage, which is €920 a month in 2026. That gives €3,680 a month (≈ AED 15,240) for a single applicant.
The embassy looks at your average monthly income over the last 3 months, from remote work for employers or clients outside Portugal. You show proof for each month, so check all three before you apply.
- There is no fixed savings rule for the D8. A buffer of a few months' income in a Portuguese account helps.
- The minimum wage usually rises each January, and the threshold rises with it.
- AED amounts are approximate. The euro figure is the one that counts.
- Figures verified on 4 November 2026.
Family figures: plan on the higher number
Your spouse and children can apply with you. The rule as written adds 50% of the minimum wage for each additional adult and 30% for each child. Some consulates apply those percentages to the D8 figure itself, which gives a much higher total. That is the safer figure to plan around.
| Household | Monthly income to plan on (2026) |
|---|---|
| One adult | €3,680 (≈ AED 15,240) |
| Two adults | €5,520 |
| Each child | add €1,104 |
The eligibility calculator shows both the official figure and this conservative figure for your household. If both adults earn enough on their own, separate applications can also be an option.
Since October 2025, bringing family over later can mean a wait of up to 2 years. Applying together is usually the better choice.
Proof of remote work
Remote employees
- An employment contract or an employer letter confirming the job.
- Your employer's written agreement that you can work remotely from Portugal. Many UAE contracts don't allow this by default, so ask early.
- At the AIMA stage, a sworn declaration from your foreign employer.
Freelancers and contractors
- Service contracts with clients outside Portugal.
- Invoices, plus bank statements showing those clients paid you.
Founders and company owners
- Company documents.
- Proof of the income you draw from the business, such as salary or dividends.
Residence visa or temporary stay
The D8 comes in two versions:
- The D8 residence visa is valid for 4 months, with 2 entries, and leads to an AIMA residence permit. Your years in Portugal count toward permanent residence and, later, citizenship.
- The D8 temporary-stay visa lasts up to 1 year, with multiple entries. It does not count toward residence, so it doesn't start your path to permanent residence or citizenship. It also asks for a copy of your return ticket.
If you plan to settle in Portugal, the residence visa is usually the right choice.
Other requirements
Proof of tax residence
You need a document showing where you are tax resident. For UAE residents, this is typically a UAE Tax Residency Certificate.
Accommodation
A lease in Portugal is strongly recommended. Short-term holiday bookings are a common weak point, and AIMA asks for proof of address at the residence permit stage.
Health insurance
For the visa, you need travel medical insurance covering urgent care and repatriation. For the residence permit, AIMA asks for health insurance or proof that you are covered by Portugal's National Health Service (SNS).
A clean criminal record
You need a police certificate from your country of nationality and from any country where you have lived for more than a year, which for most applicants includes the UAE. The UAE is not part of the Apostille system, so the UAE certificate is attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and then legalised by the Portuguese embassy in Abu Dhabi. Without the MOFA stamp, it will not be accepted. Home-country certificates need an apostille or consular legalisation, depending on the country. Our guide to UAE documents for Portugal covers each step.
Documents you'll need
A D8 file from the UAE usually includes:
- a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned return, with copies
- your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, valid beyond the end of the visa you're requesting
- an employment contract or employer letter, or service contracts with clients outside Portugal
- proof of income for the last 3 months, averaging at least €3,680 a month
- proof of tax residence, such as a UAE Tax Residency Certificate
- police certificates, attested, legalised or apostilled as required
- a form requesting a check of your Portuguese criminal record
- proof of accommodation in Portugal
- travel medical insurance
- your NIF (Portuguese tax number) and a Portuguese bank account
- the national visa application form, completed online and signed, plus two passport photos
Documents in Portuguese, English or French are accepted. Documents in other languages, including Arabic, need a certified translation stamped by the UAE MOFA.
The embassy can ask for more documents. A complete file makes a refusal less likely, but approval is never automatic. For a list built around your passport, use the document checklist.
Timeline
- About 4–7 months from the start to the visa in your passport.
- Police certificates, attestation and legalisation take about 3–8 weeks. Your NIF, bank account, lease and insurance run in parallel.
- Plan on about 2–3 months from your VFS appointment to the embassy's decision. The embassy may ask for more documents or invite you to an interview.
- About 6–14+ months from the start to your residence card, depending on AIMA.
- The first residence permit lasts 2 years, then renews for 3 years at a time. Renewals are not automatic.
- Citizenship requires 10 years of legal residence for most non-EU nationals.
You apply through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and the Embassy of Portugal in Abu Dhabi decides. Read how to apply from the UAE, or see every step in how it works.
Government fees
- Visa fee: €110 per person. Children under 6 are exempt.
- First AIMA residence permit: about €186 per person.
You'll also pay the VFS Global service charge, MOFA attestation and embassy legalisation, any translations and insurance. The authorities don't refund the visa fee if an application is refused.
Common reasons D8 files get weak
- No written employer consent. A contract alone doesn't show you may work from Portugal.
- A 3-month average below the threshold. Count only income from remote work for employers or clients outside Portugal.
- Family income planned on the lower figure instead of the conservative one.
- Freelance income without a paper trail. Invoices should match the payments on your bank statements.
- An unattested UAE police certificate.
- Short-term accommodation in place of a lease.
- Mismatches. Names, dates and figures must match on every page, and small differences are a common cause of delays.
A note on tax
Once you are tax resident in Portugal, income from work you do there is generally taxable in Portugal, even if your employer or clients are abroad. The old NHR regime is closed to new applicants. Speak to a qualified adviser about your own position before you move.
